I was always pretty lucky growing up when it came to my skin. Fortunately, I never experienced issues with acne growing up and in my teens. In fact, I get more pimples as a women over 40 than I ever did growing up. All in all though, for most of my years I have had great skin. I didn’t even start wearing foundation unitl much later in life. As I started approaching my 40’s though, like many other things on my body, I began to notice changes to my skin. All of a sudden, the simple skincare routine that worked for me my entire life, just didn’t work like it used to. That is when I had to start changing up the routine. If you know what I’m talking about, then this is just for you. This week I am sharing a roundup of the Best Skincare Routine For Your 40’s.
Why Does The Skin Change As You Age
In order to understand what the Best Skincare For Your 40’s needs to be, it’s really important to understand why your skin is changing. This will allow to you properly select a routine that will work for you. First and foremost, as we age, the elasticity and collagen in the skin starts to slow. Our skin cell turnover reduces dramatically resulting in dry and dull skin. You will also notice that fine lines and wrinkles start to become more prevalent. Therefore, changing up your skincare routine is critical for aging gracefully. In addition, there are some professional services that may be needed to add additional support if you are looking for such.
Facials, Laser Treatments and Injectables
One thing I really stepped up in my 40’s was facials. At this stage in the game, its a good idea to move from a salon facial experience and visit more of a med spa as they can provide more medical facial experiences. This was something that I decided was a non negotiable and needed to be part of my monthly routine. The treatments that I like to get are Hydrafacials and Microdermabrasion. You can click the links for each of those if you choose to learn more, but they are ideal for making sure the cell turnover is happening and you will love the way they make your skin look and feel. Laser treatments and chemical peels at a med spa are also very effective, I personally have not moved into these yet, but will likely do so as needed. Finally, Injectables such as Botox and/or fillers can make a big difference.
I know many of you have thought about Botox or Fillers but are nervous to get them because of the horror stories you have seen or heard about. Its important if you do move in this direction to do your proper research and do not get injectibles from anyone who is not a licensed medical professional, period. If you have been considering either of these, here is a breakdown of what each is and does.
BOTOX: Temporarily removes wrinkles and improves the appearance of your skin. Botox reduces the muscle activity, so that the lines and wrinkles become less visible.
FILLER: As facial tissue begins to thin, the areas around the nose mouth and cheek start to look hollow. Filler is used to replace lost volume and smooth wrinkles in those areas. This is also what is used in the lips to plump them and provide a more youthful appearance.
You can reference the photo below to see the different areas each treatment would be used. If you decide to move forward with such a treatment, be sure to seek the advice of a medical professional. I am not a medical professional so i can only share the information I have been told. I am not here to provide medical advice.
What Is The Best Skincare Routine For Your 40’s?
I tend to have set products that I like to use, some that are more of an everyday product, and then more advanced products to see the care results I am looking for. I should definitely mention, I am ALWAYS trying new things, rotating things in and out of my routine for best results. Lets first start out talking about my products I use for my morning/daytime routine.
I am a big fan of Tula Skincare, especially for my morning routine. Here is a breakdown of what products I currently am using:
1.). Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser: I’ts a probiotic gel cleanser, that goes deep into the pores to remove impurities.
2). Pro Glycolic Resurfacing Toner: This is a glycolic toners that exfoliates the skin leaving it looking smooth, hydrated and more even.
3.). Hydrating Day & Night Cream: Packed with probiotics and superfoods, this cream delivers deep hydration, firms the skin and improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles. The skin is left looking more even and glowing. if your mositurezer doesn’t have an SPF, be sure to apply one prior to your moisturizer.
4.). No Makeup Replenishing Cleansing Oil: This one is a makeup remover and face cleanser in one. I love it for those lazy nights, or to use prior to my night time skin routine. It is lightweight and fragrance free, and dissolves stubborn makeup and pore clogging debris.
Night Time Routine
For night time, I tend to go with the heavy hitters. I prefer these at night because I feel like they are able to do their work without being covered by makeup and being exposed to the sun. Using these at night, allows a full 7-9 hours for the products to penetrate into the skin and are much more effective in my opinion. Here is what I like to use for nighttime:
1.) Skin Medica Exfoliating Cleanser: Scrubs away dead skin improving the skin tone and texture.
2.) TNS Illuminating Eye Cream: Love this as it reduces fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes as well as reduces dark circles.
3.). Retinol Complex 1.0: The retinol complex comes in varying strengths so if you havent used one before maybe start with the lower strength and move up. Start with applying 1x per week and keep adding on until you are able to handle every night. This always is a heavy hitter for diminishing fine lines and wrinkles and evening out the skin.
4.). TNS Essential Serum: This is a pricier ticket item, but I can’t stress enough the impact this product has on the skin. It’s an ALL IN ONE skin rejuvinating serum, and improves fine lines and wrinkles, skin tone and texture. When I say this is a game changing product I am not lying. If you bought just one item I would say it should be this hands down.
Other Products And Tools I Love
This next section is products and tools that I use that arent part of a full system, but that I always have around to mix into my routine.
1.). Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior: This is a multi-tasking Serum, Moisturizer, Primer delivers instant and lasting hydration to thirsty skin.
2.). Sunday Riley Good Genes: I first found this while trying new products at Sephora. I instantly fell in love with it. It’s a lactic acid treatment, that immediately exfoliates dull, pore clogging dead skin cells, revealing smoother, fresher, younger looking skin.
3.) Micro Needling Roller: The tiny needles on the roller prick the face and works miracles for clearing acne scars, fading fine lines and evening out skin tone. When the skin has a wound, it heals with new collagen, so the tiny needles create very small wounds to the skin, resulting in improved appearance.
4.). Exfoliating Facial Razors: Whenever I get facials, I usually add on dermaplaning which is a treatment that removes the peach fuzz from your skin and also removes the build up of dead skin. in between treatments however, I like to keep these around to use on myself and keep my face free of peach fuzz. It just makes the makeup go on so much cleaner.
Here are the ones that I use at home:
5.). Vital Proteins Beauty Collagen: I cannot emphasize enough how much using collagen has changed my hair, skin and nails. This brand has powders you can drink alone or add to smoothies, as well as a mocha and vanilla collagen creamer that I also love using.
