EARTH DAY | 2015
My first introduction to Earth Day was back when I was in Cosmetology school. The school I went to would host a very successful Cut-A-Thon every year and donate the proceeds to various charities. Aside from the fact that it was nourishing to the soul to be a part of, it was also great practice for a beauty school kid. Since it was such a busy event, we really had to learn to work timely and efficiently, which is exactly the pace of a salon.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year worldwide in more than 192 countries. Its incredible to me to imagine the millions of people joining together worldwide, all for the same important cause. I love talking to children, because they are often more aware and more conscientious about this precious land of ours than some of us adults.
HOW CAN WE HELP IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF OUR PLANET?
Here are a few somewhat simple ways you can contribute to the planet, without it costing a fortune:
PLANT A GARDEN
Planting a garden has a lot of benefits. Not only does it benefit you by providing you with organic fresh produce, but it also reduces carbon dioxide in the air. Your garden can be as simple as an herb container garden, a vegetable garden, or you can even contribute to a community garden in your local area.
ATTEND LOCAL EARTH DAY FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
There are many events happening that you can attend. For example the local Cut-A-Thon that we did was $15.00 for a haircut. Your local news channel will likely have some information for events in your area. You can also check out http://www.meetup.com where there will definitely be some groups creating some sort of fun event.
By now, most people are already recycling at home. If your not already, recycling at home is a great start to contributing. If you don’t already have a special bin at home for recycling you can contact your local department to provide one for you.
BUY FROM RETAILERS WHO ARE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS
Believe it or not, there are still many large companies that are not environmentally conscious. Look into the products you are using in your home. Everything from cleaning products, to what you wash your hair with. For example, the haircare company Paul Mitchell has a program called THE GREEN TAKEOVER. They are teaming up with ReforestAction, an environmental organization that plants trees worldwide, in the most needed areas. When you buy Tea Tree, they plant a tree. Their goal is to plant 500,000 trees by the end of 2016. To learn more you can check it out here:
Oftentimes we can get overwhelmed trying to figure out how we can contribute. These ideas will help you get started. Even if you just pick 1 thing to do, you are already helping to make a difference for the future of our planet.
I would love to hear some of your ways that you are contributing, please share in the comments.
Wishing you all a very Happy Earth Day !
Until Next Time….
