HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT HAIRCUT FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE?

Determining the right haircut for your face shape requires a little bit of getting to know yourself. First things first, you will need to consider your facial features and structure. This means doing a little bit of research to determine your face shape. But don’t worry, I am here to help you. In this blog post, I am sharing how to determine your face shape and ultimately choose the haircut that suits you best and complements your features. If you have been wanting a new style, but have no idea where to begin, I GOT YOU! Follow the steps below to determine the right haircut for your face shape.

Determine Your Face Shape

To begin, you will want to identify your face shape. Your face shape can be round, square, oval, heart, diamond and oblong. You’re probably asking “How do I know what face shape I am?” This step is pretty simple. Using the diagram below, you can compare your face shape to the diagram. Start by pulling back your hair and examine the outline of your face in the mirror. You can print out the cheat sheet below to compare. What you will be doing is determining which face shape you are the closest to. If your face shape is a combination of two, mark which two you are the most similar to.

Research Haircuts That Suit Your Face Shape

Once you have determined your face shape, it is now time to research haircuts and styles that are recommended for your specific face shape. In your research, you can determine which celebrities have similar face shapes to yours and you will see the different haircuts and styles they wear to compliment their specific face shape. This will provide you a source of inspiration. Pinterest is a great place to do this research. I am adding a link HERE to my Pinterest page which highlights many different haircut types for you to get started. When searching, consider factors such as length, volume, and layers to save haircuts and styles you like and get rid of those your don’t.

Consider Your Hair Texture and Type

Another important step is to consider your hair texture and type. Haircuts and styles will look better and work better with different hair types. The different hair types are straight, curly, wavy, or coily hair. I will add a diagram below so that you can compare. Texture is whether or not your hair is fine, medium, or coarse. This is important to determine because if you have fine hair, you may want to avoid a haircut with too may layers. The definition of layers is: Removal of weight. If your hair is already really fine, a one length cut may be your best option for giving your hair the effect of being fuller than what it really is. You will also want to determine if you prefer a haircut that is low maintenance or are you ok with having to take time to style it daily. Asking yourself these questions will help you to end up with not only the right haircut for your face shape, but one that suits your lifestyle as well.

Identify Your Best Features

This is where you look in the mirror and do a little self praise. Determine what your best features are and look for haircuts that tend to accentuate those feature. For example, if you have eyes that are your best feature, you might want to consider a haircut that doesn’t cover them up. Similarly, if your cheekbones are your best feature, opt for a haircut that will frame your face and accentuate the cheekbones.

Book A Consultation With A Hairstylist

If you already have a hairstylist you love and trust, book with them. Otherwise, this may be the time to move on to someone else. Most salons will allow you to book a consultation only. Most consultations come free with a haircut, but there may be a small fee if you just go in for that alone. Don’t let that scare you away, this could be a great opportunity to see if you are a good fit with that stylist. During the consultation bring with you all of the inspirations you have found, and also ask for their suggestions. They will be able to confirm your research or provide some other examples that you may find to be an even better fit for you.

Don’t Be Afraid To Experiment

You have gotten this far for a reason. Don’t chicken out and decide not to try something new out of feeling safe. This is the time to experiment. Maybe choose to go for an option that isn’t too drastic of a change to start. From there you can definitely experiment more with your options. If you feel good about the consultation that you had, trust the stylist as they will know what will suit you best based on their expertise. Be open to their suggestions.

Remember, the right haircut for your face shape is subjective and may vary with the trends and your personal preferences. The most important take away, is that you find a haircut that makes you feel confident and suits your as an individual. At the end of the day, that is all that matters.
